Electromagnetic & Chaos Pendulums: Perpetual Motion Desk Sculptures
Share
Pendulum desk art has a new power source in 2026: electromagnetism. Instead of winding or battery motors, an electromagnetic base keeps a pendulum swinging indefinitely — true perpetual motion within the desk scale. It joins chaos pendulums and kinetic mobiles as the third way to keep movement alive on a desk. At Lightyear24 the pendulum range runs from $69 to $129. Here is how each type works.
The Three Pendulum Mechanisms
Electromagnetic — a powered base pulses a magnetic field to keep the pendulum swinging, so it runs continuously from a power source. Chaos — a double-pendulum whose motion never repeats, powered by a single push and gravity. Kinetic mobile — balanced spheres that drift and settle, powered by touch. Electromagnetic pieces are the "always on" option; chaos and mobiles are the "set it and watch it diverge" option.

FAQ
Is an electromagnetic pendulum really perpetual?
Within its powered base — yes, it swings continuously as long as it is powered, which is the desk-scale version of perpetual motion. Without power it stops like any pendulum.
Which is the best for a calm desk?
The Kinetic Balance Mobile ($79) — its slow drift is the least distracting motion, and it needs no power at all.
What is the best value?
The Electromagnetic Pendulum ($69) — continuous motion at the lowest price in the category.
The Bottom Line
Pendulum desk art at Lightyear24 is $69–$129: electromagnetic for always-on motion, chaos for never-repeating motion, and mobiles for calm drift. Start with the EM Pendulum ($69) and add the Balance Mobile ($79) for the full range.
